OpenAI and Anthropic alone took 43% of H1's $510B. Seed deal count fell 30% year over year while seed dollars rose 31%. Bigger checks, fewer founders.
I stopped arguing about whether AI investment is concentrated and started pulling the wires to see where each dollar actually goes. The short version: the money moves in circles. The investor is the vendor. The customer is the portfolio company. The revenue and the funding are often the same dollars at different points on the loop. Here's the machine with the panels off, every number checked against 2 or more independent sources, and the ones that couldn't be are labeled.
Exhibit A · the same dollars, both directions
The loop, drawn with real wires
Nvidia ↔ its buyers
OUT$30B into OpenAI's March 2026 round; a $100B letter of intent on top (not yet definitive)
OUT$2B equity in CoreWeave (~13%), plus a separate $6.3B commitment to buy CoreWeave's unsold capacity: investor and backstop customer at once
BACKUBS estimates the OpenAI arrangement alone is ~13% of Nvidia's 2026 revenue
Microsoft ↔ OpenAI
OUT$13B invested since 2019; 27% of the for-profit arm after the Oct 2025 restructure, marked at $135B then (~$230B at the March 2026 round price)
BACKOpenAI committed $250B in incremental Azure compute purchases
Amazon + Google ↔ Anthropic
OUTAmazon ~$33B total ($20B contingent on milestones); Google ~$40B total ($30B contingent)
BACKAnthropic committed $100B+ to AWS Trainium over 10 years, and runs on 1M+ Trainium2 chips today, plus Google TPU capacity
And the round itself closes the circle: OpenAI's $122B raise at $852B in March 2026 included $50B from Amazon ($35B contingent on an IPO or AGI milestone) and $30B from Nvidia. The company's 2 largest classes of supplier are now also among its largest shareholders. Bloomberg's own headline for its deal-map graphic: how Microsoft, OpenAI and Nvidia keep paying each other.
Exhibit B · commitments vs revenue, one scale, no log tricks
The commitment wall
OpenAI's committed compute spend by vendor, 2025-2035 · ~$1.15T itemized, $1.4T total reported
Broadcom (custom accelerators)$350B
Oracle (cloud, 2027-2032)$300B
Nvidia (letter of intent)$100B
OpenAI's entire audited 2025 revenue$13.1B
Same scale, on purpose. 2025 operating loss: $20.9B. Run rate: $2B a month in March 2026, ~$3.3B a month (~$40B annualized) by August, with 900M+ weekly users approaching 1B. Fast growth, and the commitments still assume it compounds for a decade.
Exhibit C · who's paying for the build
The capex wall, and how it's financed
$600B+
projected 2026 capex for the big hyperscalers, up 36% from $388B in 2025. Amazon ~$200B, Alphabet ~$180B, Meta ~$125B, Microsoft ~$115B. Roughly 75% targets AI.
MUFG · CREDITSIGHTS · GOLDMAN
$108B
of debt the hyperscalers raised in 2025 alone, with projections of $1.5T in issuance ahead. Aggregate capex now runs above internal cash flow. Alphabet's free cash flow went negative in Q2 2026, first time since 2004.
DEBT MARKETS REPORTING · WSJ ANALYSIS
$3T
in off-balance-sheet AI obligations across 9 major tech firms per an Aug 2026 WSJ analysis: $1.2T in uncommenced leases (4x in a year) plus $1.9T in purchase commitments. Single analysis, labeled as such.
WSJ · AUG 2026 · SINGLE-ANALYSIS
For scale: Goldman puts global AI investment above $1T in 2026, and just 2 companies, Nvidia and Micron, account for a third of all S&P 500 earnings growth this year. Nvidia is the first company to touch a $5.5T market cap. AI capex is running near 1.8% of US GDP in 2026 per Goldman, and the analyses I could verify credit it with roughly 40 to 45% of this year's US GDP growth, with some estimates running higher.
Exhibit D · the private market, priced
What the top of the market costs
| Company | Valuation | As of | Revenue basis | Rough multiple |
| Anthropic | $965B | May 2026 | $47B ARR (reported) | ~21x |
| OpenAI | $852B | Mar 2026 | ~$40B run rate (Aug 2026) | ~21x |
| xAI (into SpaceX) | $250B | Feb 2026 | $3.2B (2025) | ~78x |
| CoreWeave (public) | $104B backlog | Jun 2026 | $5.1B (2025) | backlog = 20x trailing rev |
Exhibit E · the pipeline beneath it
Minted, squeezed, absorbed
250
Minted. New unicorns by Aug 15, 2026, already past 2025's full-year total of ~190. Per Crunchbase, virtually every recent early-stage unicorn is AI-focused, and the checks minting them come from the same concentrated pool, including the giants' own venture arms.
CRUNCHBASE UNICORN BOARD
−30%
Squeezed. Seed deal count fell 30% year over year while dollars rose 31%. The rung below the unicorns is narrowing: fewer founders funded than any recent year, bigger checks for the ones who are.
CRUNCHBASE · CARTA · Q1 2026

Absorbed. The cycle's biggest reported startup exits: Inflection, Character.AI, Windsurf, Adept, Scale, Groq, Hugging Face. Each one went to one of the largest platforms, per public deal reporting. Crunchbase's own headline listed the blockbuster exits ahead as SpaceX, Anthropic and OpenAI.
DEAL REPORTING · 2024-26
Read alone, 250 unicorns in 8 months looks like a thriving competitive field. The 3 facts above sit next to it: much of the capital minting them comes from the same concentrated pool, the entry rung beneath them narrowed 30%, and the largest completed exits went to the largest platforms. Call that a healthy pipeline or call it a farm system. The numbers are identical either way; the reading is yours.
Exhibit F · 9 months of consolidation
What got bought
$12.9B
Nvidia's agreed acquisition of Hugging Face, announced Sept 3, 2026 and expected to close in H1 2027: the hub hosting 3M models and 18M developers, whose 2023 strategic round included Google, Amazon, Salesforce and Nvidia itself.

xAI's price inside the SpaceX all-stock merger, Feb 2, 2026: the largest merger in history at a $1.25T combined valuation, folding Grok and X into the rocket company. SpaceX went public June 11, 2026 at $1.75T.
CNBC · YAHOO FINANCE
$20B
Nvidia's purchase of Groq's assets in late 2025, its biggest deal until Hugging Face. Add the $20B+ in reverse acquihires (Inflection, Character.AI, Windsurf, Adept, Scale) and the pattern reads clean: the buyers are the same 5 or 6 balance sheets.

That's the machine,
measured.
Investors who are vendors. Customers who are portfolio companies. Commitments 100x revenue. A third of the index's earnings growth from 2 tickers. 250 unicorns minted into a funnel whose entry rung narrowed 30% and whose largest exits went to the largest platforms, with the open-model hub's sale to a chipmaker now agreed. I'm not telling you what to do about any of it yet. That's the next piece. This one just puts the wiring diagram on the table.
